The origins of the Lviv Symphony Orchestra date back to the first decades of the 19th century and the musical activity in Lviv of Mozart’s youngest son Franz Xavier. Franz Xavier Mozart was an organizer of musical life, the founder of the Society of St. Cecilia, within the framework of which the symphonic orchestra, which at the time also accompanied opera performances, had just begun its activities.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the orchestra continued its activities as part of the Philharmonic Society, initiated by Ludwig Heller, then director of the Lviv Opera. At that time, musicians of such stature as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Bela Bartok, who performed his Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Lviv Orchestra, performed with the orchestra. The orchestra’s post-war history is linked to the names of conductors Mykola Kolessy and Ivan Pain. Unforgettable concerts include performances by conductors Stefan Turchak, Kiril Kondrashin, Natan Rachlin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky. David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, as well as composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian, Dmitri Kabalevsky and many others have performed with the orchestra. Guest conductors have worked with the orchestra, including Roman Kofman, Thomas Sanderling, Peter Hulke, Fuat Mansurov, Volodymyr Sirenko, Roman Rewakowicz. The ensemble has made numerous foreign concert tours to Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.
