ANDRIY MERCHEL (born 1986) is a graduate of Yevhen Stankovych’s composition class at the P. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv. Merchel is involved in music and art in a wide range of fields: he is a composer, performer, director, curator of art projects, author of numerous works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles and theater. He is co-founder and artistic director of the “Sed Contra Ensemble,” curator of the Music and Theater Laboratory “Sound. Voice. Silence.”
Merchel coordinates artistic events and acts as a performer in both individual and collective projects. He was a scholarship recipient of the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage’s “Gaude Polonia” program (2014, 2018). His music has been performed by soloists and ensembles from Ukraine and Europe, including: “Ricochet”, “Molot Ensemble”, “Ensemble Nostri Temporis”, “Senza Sforzando”, “Kyiv Kamerata”, “Sed Contra Ensemble”, “Duo Sonoro”, “Innovation Duo”, State Symphony and Popular Music Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of the P. Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music of Ukraine. He has participated in many international music festivals: “Young Euro Classic”, “Randspiele”, “Kyiv Music Fest”, “GogolFest”, “Two Days and Two Nights of New Music”, “Contrasts”, “Malta Festival Poznań”, “Ukrainian Spring”, “From Avant-Garde to Contemporary”, “ArtPole”. He participated in the Kyiv international new music workshop “Course” and the international educational project “Performativity”.
