DAYS OF UKRAINIAN MUSIC

The 1st Days of Ukrainian Music in Warsaw
The three concerts of the “Days of Ukrainian Music in Warsaw” present a panorama of Ukrainian music. Everyone in Poland knows that Ukraine is “singing”, remembering, for example, Ukrainian dumkas. Few, however, know about the wealth of professional music that has been created in Ukraine over the centuries and has contributed to the development of the country’s musical culture. In this series of concerts, we would like to present it to you.

Much depended on historical conditions here. The adoption of Christianity by Kyivan Rus from Byzantium immersed it in the developed musical culture of that circle, resulting in original Kievan Orthodox church singing. In turn, the influence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the resulting western currents led to the emergence of polyphony in Orthodox music. The clash of two cultures: Eastern Orthodox and Western Catholic, led to many interesting phenomena. The first apogee of Ukrainian music was in the 18th century. The second half of this century saw the extraordinary richness of the works of Berezovsky, Bortniasky and Vedel.

It is not without reason that Ukrainian music is identified with choral music. This is the area in which it became most famous in previous centuries. The 19th century also brought new phenomena here, clearly inspired by folk music. Symphonic creativity fully developed only in the 20th century with the appearance of Latoshinsky, Revutsky, Silvestrov, Skoryk, Stankovych. These composers are joined by representatives of the younger generation. Laniuk, Shcherbakov, Shchetinsky and many other composers create an extremely interesting landscape of Ukrainian musical culture.

Wishing you an unforgettable experience, I very much hope for the permanent presence of Ukrainian music in our concert life.

Press review:

Undertakings on such a high artistic level as the Days of Ukrainian Music not only inform us what is happening ‘across the border’, but also enrich the not-so-rich musical life in Poland.
