OLEKSANDR SHYMKO (born 1977), pianist and composer, was born in Borshchov in the Ternopil region. He studied composition with Yuri Ishchenko at the National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv. Szymko’s catalog of works includes symphonic, concert, chamber, piano, vocal and instrumental, stage, and theater music.

In 2002, he graduated from the P. I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv. From 2002 to 2005 he was an assistant in the Composition Department of this Academy. He has been a member of the National Composers’ Union of Ukraine since 2003, and president of the Young Circle of Composers’ Union of Ukraine since 2004. In 2004, he received the Kyiv mayor’s award for his contribution to culture. In 2005, he held an internship in Poland – a scholarship under the “Gaude Polonia” program of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in Aleksander Lasoń’s composition class. In 2006 he received a scholarship from the “Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung” foundation in Munich. In 2007 he was awarded the Levko Revutsky Prize of the Ministry of Culture and Arts of Ukraine. Since 1999 he has been a member of the organizing committee of the international festival “Musical Premieres of the Season” in Kyiv. Since 2007, he has served as musical director of the Lesya Ukrainka Theater in Kyiv.
