3rd Days of Ukrainian Music in Warsaw

DAYS OF UKRAINIAN MUSIC

Days of Ukrainian Music in Warsaw was held for the third time. This time the festival was hosted by the National Philharmonic, which included it in its seasonal programme. For this I am very grateful to Professor Antoni Wit, Director of the National Philharmonic. Among the works of Beethoven, Chopin and Lutoslawski, Warsaw music lovers will be given the opportunity to become acquainted with works by Lyatoshynsky and Silvestrov, to name just two leading Ukrainian composers.

The 3rd Days of Ukrainian Music in Warsaw received Honorary Patronage – the President of Warsaw Mr. Lech Kaczyński and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Mr. Ihor Kharchenko. This is a very important acknowledgement of the importance of this festival.

Do we know the music of our neighbours? Are the names of the important composers there familiar to us? I think the answer to this question is not satisfactory. The presentation of Ukrainian music at the National Philharmonic certainly addresses the need to become better acquainted with the musical culture of Ukraine.

I hope you will discover very interesting phenomena, both from the deep past – such as the works performed by the ‘Gloria’ Choir by Mykola Dylecki, and contemporary – performed by pianist József Örmény or the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. The cycle closes with a performance by a Hutsul ensemble. This is yet another form of cultivating musical tradition, where the originality of the compositions gives way to the need to preserve the richness of folk culture.
